Record Store Day is Saturday, April 21. But perhaps it should be Monday, April 23. Perhaps it should be a national holiday. The post office wouldn’t deliver mail and the banks would close. Most people would have off from work. They’d visit record stores. They’d hang out and talk music. Old farts, like me, would talk about the old bands. Teenagers would talk about the new bands. Best of all, old farts and teenagers would talk with each other about the old bands and the new bands. We’d enrich each other, at least for one day. Some of us would buy music. Others would say “the budget’s too tight to buy anything right now” and then break down and just buy a little. Then on the way home some would stop at a local independent bookstore (if they could find one). They’d check out what’s new in the bins. It would be a great day. It would be a community day.
It should be a national holiday because community and connection are important. And we, as a society, are losing it, rapidly. All in the name of convenience. The almighty Amazon keeps us home which (in the case of records) robs us of the chance to shop and explore along with other music fans.
I’m sorry to say that record stores aren’t going to make a significant comeback. The best that we can hope for is for those remaining to stick around.
But communities can be born and grow in various forms and places. Here at Evinyl we’re slowly building a new community based on the power of music, and the vinyl experience and fueled by the passion of its members. Please help us by joining the site and spreading the word. All we ask is that you bring your knowledge, passion and an open mind. At Evinyl every day can be a record store global holiday.
Evinyl will be celebrating record store day with a vinyl give-away event starting at 3:00 PM. Five awesome Shoegaze albums by The Stargazer Lilies, Soundpool, The Seven Fields of Aphelion, The Morelings and Dead Leaf Echo will be available to win. The event will be run by Shoegaze DJ Greg Wilson at Decayfm.com. Simply sign in to Evinyl.net and follow the link to decayfm. Greg will ask questions about the artists. You can find the answers at each artist's profile at Evinyl.net. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. It’s gonna be awesome.
